Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival Party Pavilion Bands Rock The House

The upcoming Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival, to take place July 29-31 in Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse, isn’t all about the legendary artists populating the Palm Bay main stage. Sponsored by Unimar, the event’s twin party tents, the Mardi Gras and World Beat Pavilions, will rock with an eclectic mix of styles provided by a lineup of no less than nine bands playing Dixieland to Rockabilly.  Alternating with main stage acts, these locations will provide continuous music in Clinton Square throughout the 22 hours of festival programming.

At 5pm each night, the pavilion schedule kicks off with “Sunny 102 Happy Hour” sets sponsored by Galaxy Communications, until the main stage music gets underway. Additionally, a stage in Hanover Square will also supply music on Thursday night. The Friday and Saturday pavilion schedules alternate with main stage attractions, providing continuous music from 5pm until closing time at 11pm. The pavilions sell a full selection of the fine wines featured at the festival, plus beers and other beverages.

”This is by far the strongest collection of groups I’ve ever assembled for these party pavilions,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the event. “They have great depth, and an international flair – any of these artists could play our main stage on any given night – they’re that good.”

Thursday July 29th

On opening night of the fest, the 8pm Chris Vadala and Nancy Kelly orchestral concert is book-ended by two presentations that open the show. A J.A.S.S. All-Star Dixieland Jam Session kicks off on the Mardi Gras stage at 5PM. J.A.S.S., the region’s Dixieland and traditional jazz society, will provide a “house” group led by core members including trombonist Bobby Morris. They’ll be joined by the area’s most dedicated trad jazz players for an old-fashioned five-hour blowout. For more information regarding sitting in at the All-Star Jam Session, please contact Bobby at 315-652-0547.

The World Beat Pavilion opens with the acoustic Latin sounds of Yoham Ortiz Concept, an alternative jazz trio. Musicians Yoham Ortiz (vocals and nylon string guitar), Itaiguara Brandao (bass), and Mauricio Zottarelli  (drums) create a jazz-based sound with African and Latin American influences. The group performs original vocal songs with progressive lyrics in Spanish and in English, as well as instrumentals presented with Rock-inspired energy. Yoham has been featured in recordings with Don Cherry, Dave Valentin, Paquito de Rivera, Cecil Bridgewater and many others.

Both pavilion groups continue to entertain with a second show lasting until 11pm, starting at the conclusion of the symphony concert.

Thursday also includes a special evening of programming in Hanover Square as well, across Salina Street. Starting at 5pm, opening acts April Love and Marty Spagnola warm up for Ruha, a band that is fresh and different every time they step on stage. Ruha means Air, Breath & Atmosphere, and that is exactly what Charley Orlando, Joe Grosvent, Greg LaPoint and Brian Lauri create with this music. They have opened for or shared the stage with Phil Lesh & Friends, Steve Kimock & Crazy Engine, John Dawson & David Nelson (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Martin Fierro (Legion Of Mary), Hot Tuna, David Lindley (Jackson Browne), Peter Rowan, moe., Tony Trishka, Leftover Salmon, Blues Traveler, & Spin Doctor's to name a few and have had 2 albums nominated to the 50th and 52nd GRAMMY Ballot in a total of 11 categories.

 Friday July 30th – sets at 5PM, 7:30PM & 10PM

Friday night the Mardi Gras stage will swing again to the sounds of the Can-Am Jazz Band, an international trad and swing group led by the trumpeter, singer and pianist Jon Seiger, who has played with the likes of legends Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham and Ella Fitzgerald. His shows will feature his uncanny ability to sound like Louis Armstrong, both on trumpet and vocally.

The Headers take charge at the World Beat Pavilion Friday night, with their special brand of “High Octane Rockabilly.” Those are the words that best describe their music and showmanship. Their stage show includes a fun, danceable mix of originals, select covers and onstage antics that hearkens back to the days of the sockhops but propels the style into the future by adding infusions of jazz, country, chicken pickin’, and rock. They swing like crazy. Hint – this trio is better than Brian Setzer’s. Really.

 Saturday July 31st – sets at 5PM, 7:30PM & 10PM

On the closing day of the fest, Richie Kaye’s Music & Mirth with Tony LaVorgna, alumnus of the Jimmy Dorsey band, will take the Mardi Gras venue by storm on Saturday evening with shows at 5PM, 7:30PM & 10PM. They will be introducing teenage piano prodigy Sam Kuslan for the occasion. If you think jazz musicians don't play the melody any more, this trio will surprise and please you.  You'll hear the lyrics you know and love to sing with, played on haunting clarinet or soaring saxophone to the melodies that still inspire  -- all grounded by a swinging rhythm guitar that just bounces along.  Nothing avant-garde -- just the sweet beautiful tunefulness that makes American music the gem that it is, played with an occasional comic twist.

Reggae, Island and Jazz-infused funk wrapped in soul only begins to describe AudioInflux who will close Saturday’s World Beat programming at the festival. AudioInFlux blends sounds from funk, jazz, soul and drum- and-bass to create a mood that keeps everyone dancing. Though the band is primarily a four piece, they often perform with a horn section and guest musicians. Featuring George Miller - guitar/vocals, Chris English - drums/vocals, Kyle Uschold - bass and Drew Miltsch - keys and Doug Egling - sax/flute.

Established in 1996, the CNY Jazz Arts Foundation, Inc. is the primary year-round provider of jazz presentations in public and in schools for the entire Upstate New York region.  Their growing list of programs includes the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival, the CNY Jazz Orchestra Concert Series, Scholastic Jazz Jams, Jazz Vespers Series, The SummerJazz Workshop, Jazz in the City, Black History Month Cabaret Series, Syracuse Parks and Rec “Stan Colella” All-Star Big Band and more, serving a total annual audience of 80,000 in concert, cabaret, festival and scholastic settings.
